For years, Jadwiga Sawicka has been exploring language as a medium of power, resistance and identity, transforming everyday words into tools of social reflection. As part of the cultural programme Plac Defilad 2021, the artist drew on the slogans of the then recent social protests in support of women’s and sexual minorities’ rights. The resulting text installation, on display in public space, both documented and commented on the collective experience of the past years. Playing ever so subtly on the tensions between the words and the space, Sawicka transformed a city square into a place of memory, dialogue and resistance, and showed that language not only describes the world, but can also shape it. The artist’s earlier works, such as Converting, Taming, Training (1998, collection of the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw), prove her single-mindedness in her research into the ways language and communication contribute to social life.
