Elżbieta Jabłońska - Tapestry: FREE IN THINKING, TRUE IN LOVE
In this work, the artist used a genuine historical artifact – a wall hanging with a text in German: “Im Denken frei, im Lieben treu” [“Free in thinking, true in love”], found at an abandoned house in the village of Trękus, Warmia (Ermeland). Jabłońska, who often recycles ideas and language, translated the text into Polish and embroidered it in white thread on white cloth, a minimalist, barely visible message. It has the viewer stop, look more intently and ponder on the meaning of the words. The work has become not only a visual object, but more than anything else a relational gesture: with her tapestry, the artist went on a tour through the Warmian village , initiating conversations about the place’s past, family histories and meaning of words.
